The University of Ibadan (UI), Nigeria’s premier agricultural institution, has been proactive in addressing the climatic effects on farming. In recent years, UI has implemented several initiatives to enhance climate resilience and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
Afforestation and Climate Change Compliance
UI has embarked on deliberate afforestation efforts, including planting over a thousand native trees as part of its 75th-anniversary celebrations. These initiatives aim to create a Tree Park within the university, enhancing biodiversity and contributing to climate change mitigation. Demonstrating leadership in climate research, UI teams secured first and third positions in the Climate Risk Research Challenge-Nigeria 2023. Vegetation Conservation and Sustainable Practices
The university enforces strict policies against indiscriminate tree felling and has initiated projects to plant economic trees nationwide. These efforts are part of UI’s broader strategy to promote a greener environment and improve individual well-being.
Aquaculture and Integrated Farming Systems
UI has successfully completed projects aimed at integrating agriculture-aquaculture systems and developing nutrition-sensitive value chains in states like Kebbi and Ebonyi. These initiatives have enhanced food security and provided sustainable livelihood options for rural communities, reflecting UI’s dedication to addressing climatic effects on farming through innovative research and community engagement.
